Real Wedding in Arkansas: Myriah Chanteau Shrum & Scott Michael Van Camp, Jonesboro

Myriah Shrum didn’t need much time to warm up to her new last name. Instead, she took a shine to it as soon as she starting planning her wedding. In addition to choosing the “classic and elegant” colors of ivory and black, she also incorporated a sparkling “V” monogram into the wedding décor, embracing the name she’d inherit after saying “I do.” She chose timeless flowers including calla lilies, hydrangeas and romantic greenery to complement her chic bridal palate and monogram accents, while a dramatic ice sculpture, a lighted canopy of white gauze and a chandelier of fresh flowers above the dance floor added glamour to the refined reception.

A Family Affair

Born and raised in Jonesboro, Myriah grew up attending the First United Methodist Church in town – so it was a natural venue for the couple’s ceremony. Scott, who grew up in nearby Pocahontas, said he wanted an indoor and outdoor reception, and the Jonesboro Country Club fit the bill for the 450 guests they invited.

The location allowed the bride’s family and friends to be a major part of the planning and preparations as well as the actual wedding procession. Even her “something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue” items were provided by various family members: She borrowed earrings from her mother, her sister gave her new blue undergarments and her father gave her an old English sixpence for good luck. She also wore another old coin, which her late grandfather gave her, in her shoe.

“We come from an extended family, and we wanted to include all of our parents and stepparents in the ceremony,” Myriah said. Although having stepparents to consider during the wedding planning had the potential for sticky situations, Myriah navigated it by giving both her father and stepfather the individual recognition they deserved. “My father, Chris, and my stepfather, Brown, both gave me away. My father walked me down the aisle to the altar where Brown and Scott were waiting. This was very important to me because both have made huge impacts in my life.” Later, both shared a father-daughter dance with her.

Surprises

Myriah and Scott surprised guests with a photo booth, which made keepsakes for all of them as well as for the couple. Guests also received koozies as parting favors and used sparklers to create a gleaming bride-and-groom getaway. Much to Myriah’s surprise, Scott wrote a song for her and performed it during the reception. “I had no clue that this was going to take place,” she said, “It was a wonderful surprise, and I have never felt more special.”

But the surprises didn’t end there. What the newlyweds didn’t know was that one of the groomsmen had a surprise in store for them. “He set up a firework display as we were getting into the limo to leave,” Myriah said. “What a great ending to a new beginning!”
