Design Logic for the Soon-to-be Wed: Buying Furniture

As young newlyweds, you may not have the money to decorate your home with the help of an interior designer or buy the peices you’ve seen in catalogs or on the showroom floor. That’s OK. You don’t have to spend a lot to create a space that feels like home to you and has your style imprint. Below, I explain how to save some money, and offer my opinion on the furniture items that are worth it to splurge.

1. For the basics in each home—couches, beds, dining tables and buffet hutches (your “worker” pieces) look for how they’re made. Are they good quality? Will they stand the test of time and style? It might cost more upfront to buy these items, but you want this furniture transition from era to era. If you go for timeless “worker” pieces, they should last for a very long time and save you money in long run.

2. Save money on other furniture pieces for your home. Garage sales, flea markets, second-hand stores and, my personal favorite, estate sales are to be shopped vigorously by anyone trying to furnish a home. So many pieces are bought for less than $100 at these places. In order to get the look you want, you may have to do some sanding and painting, but trust me, it is well worth it.

Take a look at the following bargain priced furniture items that have been given some TLC by their new owners to fit their style.
