Be Great at Gratefulness
An impeccably penned letter of thanks is more of an art than a science — at least among Arkansas’ gracious Southern women. Follow these five rules for sending a thank-you showing true appreciation and personality.
1. Time it right. Etiquette dictates that thank-yous be sent within three months of the receipt of a gift. Remember, guests who give you a present at a shower and the wedding get a separate thank-you for each.
2. Penmanship counts. Handwritten thank-yous are proper, so practice writing clearly for folks and invest in a nice pen or two.
3. Be specific. Always mention the gift by name. Don’t just say “thank you for the gift,” say “thank you for the gravy boat.” It’s much more personal that way.
4. Get personal. Let’s say Great Aunt Pearl gave you those Wilton baking sheets you registered for. After giving thanks, include a sentence about the first thing you plan to bake on them or ask for her favorite cookie recipe. This shows gifters you really were thinking of them when you paused to pen the note.
5. Pretty things make people happy. Send something lovely to your loved ones. Letterpress, calligraphy, monograms, custom stamps — whatever your style, invest in memorable stationery.
