  • Reception location: McDonald Hall at Cathedral of St. Andrew

What was your theme/color story? Our colors were black and white, with accents of red. Our theme was “A Winter Wonderland with an Asian twist.” Hobart’s Printing did a wonderful job of creating a wedding stationary set with snowflakes in the background. Our florist, Fairytale Florals used some beautiful fake snow to sprinkle across the tables.

What was your overall inspiration? Our overall inspiration was the time of the year that we had our wedding and the fact that it’s my favorite season. Our colors were chosen because they are colors that we both love. Red is also an important color in the Asian culture, so that was something that I considered.

What were the interesting personal touches and unique details?

  • We had red uplighting that changed the way our hall looked, along with two textured lights of bamboo trees. When you walked into the hall, your breath was taken away because it felt like you were in another place. We went with the bamboo trees rather than branches or textured lights because it was another Asian element that meant a lot to me.
  • Everyone expected that we would have a Razorback cake because my husband is a HUGE Razorback fan, but we decided to do a Boston Red Sox cake because he is also a Red Sox fan. Mickey’s Special Affairs did an amazing job with the cake.
  • For our favors, we had fortune cookies out along with a sign that said, “Sharing fortune cookies with loved ones will lead to happiness for all. Lucky numbers 1-29-2011.” It was a cute nod to my Asian side.
  • We had a hot chocolate and coffee bar since it was winter time and I thought it would be a fun thing to have. We had different flavors that people could add in and different toppings like whipped cream, chocolate sauce, and more. Simply the Best Catering took the idea that I had and made it into a reality.

What one detail truly made the wedding yours? There was a moment that my photographer caught right after my husband and I had our first kiss as a married couple. We both hugged each other for a while and she was able to capture that sweet moment when we realized we were each other’s for life. Everyone commented on how you could feel the love all around the whole evening.

How did you customize your wedding? We didn’t worry too much about trying to do something very unique or unheard of. Instead, we focused on our vows and family. We made sure that each decision that we made was something important to ourselves and families. It resulted in a weekend of wedding bliss and everyone who attended the wedding left happy and full of good feelings.

How did you save money in planning your wedding? We saved money by focusing on what was important to us and by hiring a planner. I never believed it when a bride would say that they saved money by hiring a wedding planner, but it saved us a lot.
