Amanda Dickinson + Bart Tracy
June 22, 2013 • Pratt Place Barn, Fayetteville
Engagement story: Bart was spending the summer in Richmond, Va. working for the Commonwealth Attorney’s office. I was in Charleston, S.C. teaching a summer session. I knew Bart was headed to Charleston that Thursday afternoon to celebrate my birthday, but I did not think he would be in so early. When I pulled into my parking garage that afternoon, he pulled in right behind me. I was surprised but I didn’t think anything of it. He told me we were going up to McClellanville to visit our friend Heidi and her family. His story was that Heidi was going to let us take out her boat and meet them on one of the little barrier islands in the area. When we got to Heidi’s house, we jumped on the boat and were on our way to the island to meet them. After driving around in the boat, I pulled out a couple of beers from the ice chest. Little did I know that down in the bottom of the cooler was a bottle of champagne with two glasses! Bart then started moving toward the front of the boat closer to me as we floated around the marsh. At that moment I knew something was going on. After a few more words he got down on one knee and pulled the most beautiful ring out of a beach chair pocket and asked me to marry him. He says I stalled for a few seconds but I know I immediately said “yes!”
Little did I know, Bart had been in town a day earlier. He borrowed the boat from one of his law school buddies and had already gone out to McClellanville to scope out a spot with Heidi. After getting off the boat, in the the distance, I saw my mom, dad and two sisters Natalie and Hannah, and Bart’s parents, Beth and Jon. I immediately fell to the bottom of the boat crying. Both of our families drove countless hours to be there to help us celebrate.
