Ashley Parker of Hamburg and Shawn Smith of North Little Rock — both current residents of Conway — are engaged to be married Oct. 27 at the Second Baptist Church. Here’s Ashley’s story of how they met, and Shawn’s creative way of proposing:
Shawn I and met May 14, 2008 (my mommy’s birthday). I had just gotten hired at the new Neighborhood Market in Maumelle and my store was still preparing to open. I was walking to the break room with one of my co-workers and Shawn was walking from the break room. My co-worker saw him and immediately greeted him. They knew each other from high school. I said hi in a hurry to get back to the break room to eat. I was eating and he and my co-worker were catching up. I didn’t want to be rude so we started a conversation and we found out that we knew some of the same people.
We exchanged numbers but neither one of us called each other that night. We saw each other the next day and Shawn had just gotten a fresh cut with a fresh line and I had to do a double take. He invited me to go out with him that night and we had a blast. We talked all night on the phone. On May 20, 2008 Shawn asked me to join his ‘team’ – the NFL (National Forever League) – and we have been inseparable ever since. When he proposed, he presented me with a shirt and hat as if we were at a press conference and he announced me as MVP.
